And now, the most non-musical person (also most non-athletic) on the planet just smiles and nods. I really don't know the difference, but then again, I've never really studied music. We had a music class in Junior High that had history on the two, but we never actually got to listen to any of the music we read about. Music class wasn't silent, though. The teacher spend entire periods with idiotic half-hearted rants...
You had a music history class where you never listened to music? That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. *rants silently*
Lessee if I can describe the difference. Beethoven was a Romantic; Mozart was Classical. Classical guys were all about structure and form and seeing how well you could work within set patterns and showing off how brilliant they were. Romantics are a lot freer about what they can and can't do, have more dynamics and instruments, and generally play around a bit more.
Mozart = Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (pretty, strings, background music)
Beethoven = Ode to Joy (loud, kinda chaotic, more stirring)
Make sense? (Sorry, I know you weren't expecting Music History 101… )

Okay, great! I could probably go into more detail on all that music stuff. I know way too much about this kind of thing. You do that. Tried to pick famous pieces that you'd stand a chance of knowing. You have heard of them, right?

That's OK. I learned something today! I'll have to give them both a listen and see the difference for myself.
